Following recommendations and several glowing references, we chose Coleman Building Company to build a complicated and fiddly extension on the first floor of our house in Fulflood, Winchester. We live in a particularly inaccessible part of the city, with serious access issues. Right from the start Coleman’s were honest, open, courteous and, most importantly of all, enthusiastic at the prospect of tackling the challenge of our project, and this never wavered throughout the duration of the job. Due to the age of our property, several complications presented themselves over the course of the building works, and these were all dealt with in a patient, thoughtful and cost-effective fashion. The quality of the work was (and remains) exemplary throughout; we were consulted at every turn, and the entire, potentially extremely stressful experience of such major domestic upheaval was made as pain-free and pleasant as it was possible to make it. We have no complaints whatsoever – the work was completed to a very high standard by a great bunch of people – and we have no hesitation in recommending Coleman Building Company to anybody that may ask (and we are happy to be asked). Companies with this much integrity, courtesy and rock solid customer care are fast becoming a dying breed, and we are delighted to be able to provide this reference. Were we to wind back the clock to the start of our building project, we would have absolutely no hesitation in using Coleman’s again.

Our project consisted of contemporary glass and brick kitchen extension, kitchen replacement, demolition and replacement of 2 garages and driveway in traditional style and materials. All to a house dating from 1900 in a Conservation area and within an urban and confined site. The overall experience was excellent. I have been aware of Coleman’s for approximately six years, working with the company in a professional capacity and more recently using the company to carry out work on our home. The standard of workmanship was also excellent all round with attention to detail a highpoint. The work represented good value, was carried out in an efficient and workmanlike manner with a friendly team of people, initially a delay in getting started, but once it was underway it was completed within the time frame suggested. The Project was to build a small extension to the main house to include a bathroom and garden store. The overall experience was excellent apart from a rather protracted time to complete.  However the quality of workmanship was very high resulting in a very short snagging list, and together with the common sense, pragmatic approach to the inevitable problems encountered during the build, more than made up for the delays to completion.
All the personnel were friendly, pleasant to deal with and willing to accommodate our needs, such that we felt comfortable going on holiday and allowing full access to the house and work to continue in our absence. We have already recommended Coleman’s to a neighbour who is planning to build a new bungalow and are giving all our own ongoing property maintenance to Coleman’s.

We have enjoyed 3 separate projects with Coleman Building Company. The first, in 2007, was for a major house extension lasting almost 7 months. The second was a rearrangement of the back patio area which involved dismantling a large quantity of decking and its replacement in brick and stone. Lasted 6 weeks. Third project and more recently, Sep 2009, was the installation of a dormer window in our guest bedroom which lasted almost one month. The whole process of planning and executing all of these projects was done in a genial, co-operative and attentive manner. As expected from a medium sized but permanent workforce the standard of work was high. The longstanding nature and years of service with Coleman Building speaks for itself. Due to frequent and early-day inspections by the Directors the punctuality of the workmen was high, as was the individual standard of personal conduct. Without question in an industry that can be very hit and miss the comfort and peace of mind in knowing that one’s projects are always under control is very reassuring. Over a lifetime of building projects I would rate Coleman Building Company as one of the best I have dealt with. No hesitation.

We were looking to build a new house, though looking old from the outside. To achieve this we wanted to use handmade bricks which had variations in quality, flint blocks and handmade tiles. We were looking for a builder who was happy for us to be involved throughout, was prepared to use unusual materials, who we could enjoy working with and who fitted in with our budget. Coleman Builders satisfied all these. We had also decided to use a ground source heat pump which was relatively new technology in the UK and necessitated a lot of initial groundwork and some new skills. The house was to be built in a small village and therefore a tidy site with the least disruption was also important. We selected Coleman because their tender (of 4) was competitive and we felt comfortable that we could communicate with Philip and James on anything during the building process. Prior to selecting Coleman’s we asked to speak to some of their previous clients and the positive responses we received helped us make up our mind. The experience was most enjoyable and we were kept informed all along the way and consulted on any issues as they arose. Where there were options, we were involved and advice given where asked. We chose to source much of the materials ourselves and nothing was too much trouble, even outside the original brief (for example making use of an old underground water tank that we wanted to use for rainwater harvesting).
In the main the workmanship was excellent. The brick-layers had a difficult job with many of the bricks as they were handmade and odd-shaped but this was all taken in their stride and the finished result was excellent. When there were any issues, they were put right without argument. The floor of the garage was put down and prepared by Coleman’s and the manufacture/erector of the garage commented that he had never seen such a level and smooth finish! The Coleman family are very easy to deal with and whilst James was on site every day, Philip, owing to his greater experience, oversaw all the various stages of the building work. The site personnel were, in the main, very pleasant to deal with and would go out of their way to assist, including unloading furniture being delivered before we moved in.
We would recommend Coleman Building Company – and have!

I would like to thank you for the work your company carried out on my flat. From our first appointment, when you came to see the job, to the time the team left I was impressed with the professional friendly manner of yourself and your team. From my experience I have found builders are happy to make appointment to come and price a project but either a) don’t turn up – or even have the curtsy to let me know they aren’t going to make the appointment, or b) come and see the job and then don’t follow through with a quote. As I work full time this is a very frustrating exercise, however you arrived at the appointed time and sent me a quote (with a price that you stuck to) by return. Living in a first floor flat (with limited parking/access) must have been a challenge for your team, but they without fail turned up on time, complete with equipment needed for the job and all of them polite and friendly. I had walls moved – one being a supporting wall – then plastered, doors bricked up, new doors added and electric points moved/added. The surrounding area’s of the flat were protected, rubble disposed of and no complaints from the neighbours! The quality of work was first class and I would have no hesitation to recommend your company, please feel free to use this letter as a testimonial should you wish. Although this was not a large project if you would like to show potential clients your work I would be happy to accommodate this.

The work again was carried out to a good standard and for me the response to snagging and the inevitable adjustments following actual use of the systems was prompt and courteous.

Coleman’s have carried out three restoration projects for us to great satisfaction. The first was a rebuild of a Victorian porch which entailed the re-using of all existing materials (wherever possible) and replacement of shaped and carved woodwork.   The result was entirely satisfactory. More recently Coleman builders have worked on our current three-hundred year old house. Philip project managed and was most sympathetic to the needs of the Grade 2 listed building. Some portion of the work was restoring what previous owners had unsatisfactorily “overhauled”. The result was excellent and completed very quickly. The second task was the complete rebuilding of a suspended Edwardian bay built onto the Georgian House. The roof and tile-hanging were removed, insulated and replaced.   New lead-work was professionally installed. The floor, too, was insulated and rebounded.   The whole was painted and looks a glorious, tidy restoration. I recommend Coleman Builders for complex sensitive work.

After an extensive search we appointed Coleman’s to create our dream home from a derelict and extremely distressed barn.  It was a very major project, taking over a year to complete and with all the challenges of a listed building, disintegrating timbers, the vision of a modern interior and very demanding clients.  Philip, James and their team were simply magnificent.  Coleman’s took a lead coordinating role amongst the architect, a designer, the QS and us, the clients, so that communications were strong, problems quickly found solutions and decisions were made quickly and appropriately.  The quality of the work completed was fantastic – huge sympathy was shown for the core building and this was then matched with attention to detail for the contemporary interior where there is no place to hide shoddy craftsmanship.
